Partner Andrew Nutbrown was recently interviewed on The Probate Expert Bill Gross’ Estate Planning Podcast, during which Nutbrown discussed the logistics and ethos of being an estate planning lawyer.

In Nutbrown’s third appearance as a podcast guest speaker for estate planning professionals, he discusses the process by which clients determine they need an estate planning attorney with, specifically, international estate planning experience. Nutbrown, who is originally from Canada and dually barred in Ontario and the state of California, has extensive experience in cross-border estate planning for high-net-worth clients with real estate in both aforementioned areas.

The conversation progressed to different estate planning strategies for high-net-worth clients setting up or adjusting their plans based on their timing, net worth. With the administration’s impending One, Big, Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA) not yet signed, there was a significant amount of conditions up in the air that are now signed into effect and will affect the way estate plans are laid out in the future.

Lastly, Gross inquired about a specific case in which Nutbrown was brought in to reconfigure an existing estate plan. Nutbrown explained that the work, similar to other cases the firm has taken on, involved updating preexisting trusts for an estate that had developed to a capacity that required a second attorney’s consultation. The two discussed what it meant to recognize that a matter may need additional perspectives in order to best assist the client. “There’s a professional duty and an ethical duty to refer out work that you’re not capable of doing…The best lawyers that I’ve worked with, have been against in litigation cases, are ones that will say they don’t know something when they don’t know something…I’ve often found that they are the most capable as well.” Nutbrown’s attention to detail, care for his clients, and ability to formulate tax strategies to his clients’ advantage are just a few reasons why he is a sought-after attorney in this field.
